OVERVIEW
Cafe Chairo is a quaint, fully vegan Japanese tea café tucked along Cat Street near Harajuku and Omotesando. Located at 1F Cha-an Omotesando, 5-11-13 Jingumae, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo 150-0001, it’s open six days a week (closed Tuesdays), generally from 12:30 PM to 7:00 PM. Whether you’re looking for a quiet interlude or a cozy sweets stop, this café offers both.
THE RESTAURANT
Run by an American owner passionate about Japanese culture and driven by a personal dairy allergy, Cafe Chairo presents handmade vegan wagashi (traditional sweets) crafted with rice milk, cashew milk, seasonal fruit sauces, black sugar syrup, and fresh anko. Signature offerings include miso dango with matcha, hojicha, or caramel sauces, as well as an “anko soup,” matcha muffins, and daifuku. Seating blends traditional tatami style with a modern, pastel-toned interior, and the café frequently welcomes visitors alongside its calm resident cat, Koyane-chan.
DINING & RECOMMENDATIONS
Visitors rave about the photogenic and flavorful sweets like the matcha shiru ko (matcha “soup” over anko with mochi) and karume-yaki milk topped with crisp brown sugar. The matcha latte with cashew milk and the sparkling tea with yuzu or persimmon soda are also favorites. Many describe the café as a relaxing gem amidst Harajuku buzz, perfect for solo visits or intimate tea time moments—especially with the added charm of the resident cat.
WHY VISIT?
Cafe Chairo embodies a serene and stylish take on traditional sweets—fully vegan, deeply rooted in Japanese tea culture, and utterly charming. With minimal seating, artisanal treats, tasteful décor, and proximity to Harajuku attractions, it’s an ideal choice for vegan visitors, tea enthusiasts, or anyone seeking a peaceful break in a busy neighborhood.
